Although Luciano Pezzi only took three pro wins in his 13 pro seasons, the lanky climber from Russi (Emilia-Romagna) was much valued as a "gregario" or helper. His tactical nous and cycling acumen served him well as Pezzi road for team leaders like Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali and Gastone Nencini.
Back in '49, Atala's leader was Emilio De Marchi's friend Toni Bevilacqua, who wore the distinctive great and blue stripe jersey of Cesere Rizzato's Atala bicycle marque. Pezzi went on to a distinguished career as a sports director, where he guided Felice Gimondi to his Tour de France win and eventually working with Marco Pantani at Mercatone Uno.
Our Atala Luciano Pezzi Jersey is an authentic reproduction of the jersey originally made by De Marchi in 1949.
We use an itch-free Merino wool blend for easy care, classic mother-of-pearl buttoned pockets
with reinforced stitching, logos in Cornely-type hand cranked embroidery and doubled cuffs.
Handmade in Italy by De Marchi, like back in the day.
