IL DESIGN
The result of years of research and hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel is the design of the circle called Sawtooth, which allows for high aerodynamic efficiency and side wind stability that far exceeds conventional wheel performance.
The Zipp 858 NSW 82-77mm wave profile adopts Sawtooth ™ technology derived from biomimetic studies developed for the innovative Zipp 454 NSW, allowing new levels of speed and control called AeroBalance.
The lowest aerodynamic resistance and the best side wind stability that allows the Sawtooth ™ design are amplified by the taller rim profile, with further gains in performance and driving confidence.
Runners can therefore stay longer in the aerodynamic position as well as save energy in the event of side wind, energy that should be spent to keep the bike in line using conventional wheels.
That energy can instead be used to bring the bike at higher speeds. The 858 NSW achieves these aerodynamic performance through the high dispersion frequency of the vortexes.
The low dispersion frequencies produce larger and more powerful vortexes. In cycling terms, this instability situation is often referred to as "buffeting", slap.
The architecture of the 858 Sawtooth ™ Corrugated Circle with HyperFoils ™ and HexFin ™ ABLC ripples helps stabilize under wind gusts by increasing the vortex dispersion frequency. The greater the dispersion frequency of vortexes produced by these structures creates a greater number of smaller and less powerful vortices that are more predictable and lead to greater wheel stability.
